The composer Herman Rundberg recently released “Northern Soul – The Album”. An album of collaborations made with Mari Boine, Kråkesølv, Kjetil Holmstad-Solberg, Petter Carlsen, SlinCraze and the trompetist Ole Jørn Myklebust. Kråkesølv and Mari Boine on the same album – this I gotta hear.
The first track is a 8 minute long prelude. What surprised me is that I didn’t push the stop button. The music is beautiful and so soothing for the ears. The album has both melodic tunes and songs in both English, Norwegian and Sami. It is hard to describe the beautiful melodies, the powerful voices and all the bits and pieces that makes this album so great. I haven’t heard sami-music in this way, and it is wonderful. Not only is the album filled with nine lovely songs, it’s different in a great way. It’s the first time I’ve heard rap in Sami. The tracks that stood out for me were “The Sound of Thousand Years”, “Hjemmeseier” and “Trace”. In whole the album is a great and modern way of introducing the music-culture from the north. I love it!
